WHAT SIZE BIRD DO I NEED?
There is no easy answer – this depends on many factors including, but not limited to, what other sides are being served, how much meat your family generally eats and whether you want leftovers (of course!!)
EXTRA SMALL: 10-12 lbs. – We always have some of these and they are a favorite of small families that want to enjoy the holiday bird but don’t want to eat turkey through Christmas! They will feed two to six people depending on sides and will be the star of the Holiday Table!
SMALL: 13 -15 lbs. – This bird has a bit more meat on the bones and feeds from 4 to 8 people depending on number of leftovers desired and how many other sides are part of the dinner. Please not this is 4 to 6 adults and children – not 8 adults!
MEDIUM: 16- 18 lbs. – A beautiful bird on the Thanksgiving table, this size turkey will feed anywhere from 6 to 12 guests depending on mix of diners and additional food available – but err on the feeding 8-10 side
LARGE: 19-21 lbs. – Feeds a larger group of 10 to 16 with few leftovers or 8-12 with leftovers for more than one family to take home. Looks GREAT at the Harvest Celebration!
EXTRA LARGE: 22– 25 lbs. – This beauty will feed a larger group of 12 -18 and still have some turkey to send home with grandma as well as to make sandwiches for the weekend!
EMU (not a real EMU) 26 to 30 plus lbs. – Often closer to 30 lbs., these birds are for the big gatherings and loved to be photographed!! We usually try to have one of these and make turkey pot pies and turkey soup with the leftovers – it is perfect for a wonderful dinner presentation, plus weekend sandwiches and several pies. Because it cooks in under six hours it does not require a midnight oven operation.
